Madison High School Reviews

My student will be a junior in Sept. and has been at Madison since freshman (9th grade) year. She is in the M community and has been very happy and successful there (an all A student). Her teachers are very caring and committed to their students. The only down side has been the cross-over hurdle to take AP classes in a diferent community, although I understand that is being changed this coming year. All in all, we love Madison and its teachers! There are also lots of extra-curricular activities going on constantly and the SUN community is a great asset.

My son is starting his 3rd year at Madison and overall we've had a very positive experience. The teachers and administrators at Madison are very committed and caring. Academically, Madison is on the rise, class sizes are fairly small, the school is adding additional AP classes every year, and the AVID program provides solid support for students intent on getting to college. There are lots of extracurricular activities at Madison to suit a wide range of interest. The school has some great coaches and a new music teacher who doing some great work with aspiring student musicians. Madison is well on it's way to being one of Portland's top schools. It has a lot to offer and due to it's small size, students can get the classes the want in uncrowded classroom with teachers and adminstrators who know who they are.

I have gone to Madison for 3 years, and there are so many activities you can get involved in. I am involved on journalism, a program that I love. People often forget that the newspaper is probably the best forms of communication at this school. People look down on this school because is doesn't have too much money, but look at the paper, it is great and we do have great things to say. I was scared about going to this school, but you really have to get past that and see that Madison is what the world looks like. The world is filled with people that speak different languages, with different backgrounds too, that is why Madison is so great, because it prepares your child for the real world, they aren't sheltered.

I just transferred to Madison this past year, and didn't know anyone. I was shocked to find out that everyone was friendly, though they didn't know me from adam. That wasn't the case at Grant or Lincoln. There were no clicks here. Through this school I have become more involved than ever; Theatre, Speech/debate, Journalism/editor, school leader, IGNITE. As the IGNITE leader I am proud to say that all freshmen will now have a huge support system, making their transfer easier. When looking at a high school for yourself or your child, don't pass up Madison, because we're not the richest, or because we are on 82nd, instead look inside at us. The diversity, the quality of teachers and class sizes, the immense opprotunities. We really are the best kept secret of Portland Public Schools.

I am very pleased with the small school re-organization at Madison. Class sizes are small. At parent conferences I was pleased with how well the teachers knew my student and how much time I was able to spend talking to each of them. A very caring and devoted staff. They are adding more AP classes each year. My child feels very safe at his school. Students have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of programs. The staff listens to parent and student input as demonstrated during the meetings and decisions about changing into small schools.

I've been a student at Madison for the past three years. The entire staff has been so supportive during my time there, and I feel like I'm leaving high school prepared for college. Teachers are willing to give up their personal time after school to give one-on-one instruction, and then go on to coach sports. I m especially proud of our speech and debate team, the Mad Mouths; they re winning award and tournaments all over the place! All in all, I am honored to consider myself part of the Madison community and know my peers feel the same. 8th graders choosing a high school could not do better than Madison: for academics, extracurricular activities, and general quality.
